In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Ephesians 5:8-14 - For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
    rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Devotional: Jesus not only claimed to be the light of the world—He called His followers to be light as well. "You are the light of the world," He declared. This means light isn't just something we receive; it's something we reflect and become.

Every day presents a choice: will we turn toward the light or settle into darkness? Fear leads to anger, anger to hate, hate to suffering. But faith leads to hope, hope to love, love to abundant life. The path we choose determines not just our destination but our daily experience.

Being light doesn't mean we've conquered all darkness within us. It means we've made the choice to follow Jesus despite the darkness that remains. We cry out, "I believe; help my unbelief!" and take the next step toward Him.

Consider: What small choice can you make today to turn toward the light? Perhaps it's choosing honesty over hiding, forgiveness over resentment, or vulnerability over self-protection. Choose light.

God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.......
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

Devotional: "Let there be light" were God's first creative words. Before vegetation, animals, or humanity, there was light. This wasn't arbitrary—everything that followed depended on it. Plants need photosynthesis. Animals need plants. We need both. Light isn't optional; it's foundational to life itself.

Spiritually, the same is true. We cannot grow, thrive, or truly live apart from the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”.......For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Devotional: Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." This wasn't a casual statement—it was an explosive claim to divinity made during the Feast of Tabernacles when giant lampstands illuminated Jerusalem, symbolizing God's presence with His people.

Perhaps darkness has become normal for you. You've learned to navigate it, developed a feel for it, even found comfort in its familiarity. But God's verdict is clear: light has come into the world. The darkness you've grown accustomed to—hidden conversations, buried offenses, masked pain—isn't how you were meant to live.

Today, acknowledge one area where darkness feels normal. Bring it into the light by confessing it to God or a trusted friend. Remember, Jesus didn't come to condemn but to save. His light exposes not to shame you, but to free you.

Dr. Pruitt, despite extraordinary success, had one deep regret: not reading enough of God's Word itself. Don't let busyness, distraction, or substitutes rob you of this treasure. The Bread of Life reveals Himself most clearly in the written Word. Exodus 3:13-15

The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. John 8:48-59

Devotional: When Jesus said "I AM," Jewish listeners immediately recognized the claim. This was the sacred name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush—the eternal, self-existent One. Jesus wasn't just a good teacher or moral example; He was claiming to be God in human flesh. This changes everything. If Jesus is merely inspirational, you can take or leave His teachings. But if He is the I AM—preexistent, divine, authoritative—then His words demand your complete surrender. The crowds faced this same choice: dismiss Him as blasphemous or worship Him as Lord. There is no middle ground with Jesus. Today, consider whether you've truly reckoned with who He claims to be. Your eternity depends on your answer.

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Devotional: Many disciples walked away when Jesus declared Himself the Bread of Life. The difficulty wasn't what they didn't understand—it was what they did understand. Jesus was claiming divinity, demanding total allegiance, offering Himself as the only source of eternal life. This remains offensive today. Our culture prefers a customizable spirituality, not exclusive claims to truth. But Peter's response cuts through the confusion: "To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." When Jesus offends your preferences, challenges your autonomy, or demands what feels costly, where else will you turn? Every alternative leads to death. Only Jesus offers life. Will you stay when others walk away?

Unlike ancient texts with mere handfuls of copies, we possess over 5,800 New Testament manuscripts—a testimony to God's preservation of His truth. But here's the challenge: do you treat Scripture as living and active, or as blank pages? Dr. Pruitt's greatest regret wasn't that he failed to read about the Bible, but that he didn't read the Bible itself. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Instead, Jesus offered one profound answer: believe. The work of God begins not with striving but with trusting. Before you can live rightly, you must believe rightly. Faith isn't about checking boxes or performing religious rituals—it's about being persuaded by the evidence of who Jesus is and stepping into relationship with Him. Today, examine your spiritual life. Are you exhausted trying to earn God's approval through behavior? Or are you resting in belief, allowing that conviction to naturally shape how you live? Right belief always produces right behavior, not the other way around.

God gives us power, love, and self-discipline—but we must activate these gifts through self-leadership. David demonstrated this when he rebuked his men and refused to harm Saul, taking ownership of the situation despite external pressure. Self-leadership means being controlled, present, and intentional—showing up as who you need to be for the people who need you most. When this is off, everything else crumbles. But when you lead yourself well, you become a source of transformation for your entire family. The change you want to see in your home begins with the change you're willing to make in yourself. God can use your decision to take responsibility as the catalyst for generational impact.

Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to exercise greater self-discipline and leadership? How might your growth in this area transform your family?

She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Devotional: Martha was doing good things—serving, preparing, working. But Mary chose what was best: sitting at Jesus' feet. The gap between "better" and "best" is where many families get stuck. We fill our calendars with good activities—sports, lessons, church events—until we're overbooked as a whole and overlooked as individuals. Excellence isn't about doing more; it's about discerning what matters most. Jesus said only one thing is necessary. In our rushed culture, the best choice is often the one that creates margin for relationships, rest, and God's presence. When families prioritize what is best over what is merely good, they discover a peace and connection that busyness can never provide. What "good" things might you need to release to make room for the best things?

Reflection: What is the "one thing necessary" for your family right now? Yet families often fall into the trap of forcing conformity—parents projecting their unfulfilled dreams onto children, spouses expecting their partner to be someone they're not. Paul instructs us to look not only to our own interests but to the interests of others. This requires seeing family members as individuals God is shaping, not projects we're managing. David understood he couldn't wear Saul's armor; he needed to be himself to fulfill God's calling. Similarly, each person in your family has their own "armor" that won't fit anyone else. When we honor individuality rather than demand conformity, family members flourish. They feel seen, valued, and free to become who God designed them to be. Create space for each person's unique journey.

Reflection: Who in your family might be feeling overlooked or pressured to be someone they're not? But provision means more than groceries and mortgage payments—it's about your presence, your leadership, and your ability to move your family forward spiritually and emotionally. Many families today are materially comfortable but relationally bankrupt. Parents work multiple jobs to provide things while children desperately need their time and attention. God calls us to a holistic provision that addresses the soul, not just the stomach. Your family needs you fully present, not just physically there but emotionally engaged and spiritually leading. When we neglect this broader understanding of provision, everyone feels that something is missing, even if they can't name it. True provision means showing up with your whole heart.

Reflection: In what ways are you truly providing for those in your household? He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

Devotional: David's conscience immediately bothered him after cutting Saul's robe—a seemingly small act that violated his values. God has given each of us an internal compass that alerts us when something is off. Like David in that cave, we sometimes find ourselves surrounded by voices urging us toward actions that compromise who we're called to be. The distressed and depressed men around David couldn't offer godly counsel because they weren't in a healthy place themselves. Today, consider: whose voices are you allowing to influence your decisions? Is your conscience trying to get your attention? God's Spirit speaks through that inner conviction, guiding you back to alignment with His purposes. Don't ignore that feeling when something doesn't sit right—it may be God's protection over your character and calling.

Reflection: What decision are you facing where you feel something is "off"? Pause and listen to what your conscience is telling you.

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Devotional:
"We accept everyone" doesn't mean we approve of everything. It means we recognize that God's kindness leads to repentance, not our condemnation. Paul writes that we were dead in our transgressions, but God made us alive with Christ—not because we earned it, but because of His great love and mercy. Acceptance creates the space for transformation. When people encounter genuine love without condemnation, they encounter Jesus. This is the gospel: you are saved by grace through faith, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Notice the order: acceptance, salvation, then transformation. We don't clean up to come to Jesus; we come to Jesus and He cleans us up. Madison Hills opens its doors wide because the Father's heart is wide open. You are His workmanship, and He's not finished with you yet.

Reflection: Who in your life needs to experience acceptance before they can experience transformation?

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Devotional: In John's account, "the older ones" dropped their stones first. Spiritual maturity recognizes our own need for grace before we demand holiness from others. The older generation understood what the younger accusers had yet to learn: we're all disqualified from throwing stones. Humility isn't weakness; it's wisdom. It's the posture of Christ Himself, who "made himself nothing" for our sake. At Madison Hills and in every healthy church, mature believers lead by example—not by condemnation but by compassion. They've walked long enough with Jesus to know their own capacity for sin and God's greater capacity for grace. When we embrace the mind of Christ, we stop looking for people to condemn and start looking for people to restore. Maturity means dropping your stone first.

Reflection: How can you lead by example in showing grace to someone who doesn't deserve it?

Leaving sin isn't about white-knuckle willpower; it's about recognizing you're ready for transformation. Paul writes that in Christ, you are a new creation—the old has gone, the new is here. This requires practical steps: deleting apps, blocking numbers, changing friend groups, avoiding familiar temptations. Transformation happens when the Holy Spirit's conviction meets your willingness to act now. You don't need to wait until you feel strong enough. The power for change comes from Christ, not from you. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Devotional:
Jesus met the woman caught in adultery exactly where she was—exposed, ashamed, and expecting condemnation. Yet His response was radical grace: "Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin." Notice the sequence: acceptance first, then transformation. God doesn't wait until you're perfect to love you; He loves you into perfection. You are ready now—not because you've arrived, but because God has already drawn near to you. Whatever shame you're carrying, whatever secret you're hiding, Jesus sees it all and still says, "Neither do I condemn you." The question isn't whether you're worthy of change; it's whether you're ready to receive the grace that makes change possible. Today, you stand at the intersection of mercy and transformation.

Reflection: What stone of judgment—toward yourself or others—do you need to lay down today?

NIV

Devotional: The ultimate goal isn't just making disciples—it's making disciples who make disciples. Paul told Timothy to entrust truth to faithful people who could teach others also. That's four generations of faith: Paul, Timothy, faithful people, and others. This multiplication is how the gospel spreads and the Church grows. When you invest in someone spiritually, you're not just changing one life; you're potentially impacting countless others they'll influence. This requires intentionality and patience. It means teaching someone not just what to believe but how to pass it on. As you stand in God's presence today, ask Him these two questions: What is God saying to me? What am I going to do about it? Let the wind of the Holy Spirit blow fresh direction into your life, then step forward in obedience.

Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. NIV

Devotional: The Greek word Jesus used means "go discipling"—not as a scheduled event but as a way of life. Discipleship happens in the carpool line, over coffee, during work breaks, and in everyday moments. It's not about adding another program to your calendar; it's about inviting someone into your life as you follow Jesus. Think about how parents teach children—not just in formal lessons but through constant interaction, modeling, and conversation. Jesus modeled this with His disciples, teaching them while walking, eating, and serving. What if you stopped compartmentalizing your faith and started living it openly? Who could you invite into your normal rhythms of life? Discipleship thrives in authenticity, not perfection. Let someone see your real walk with Jesus.

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. NIV

Devotional: God has uniquely wired you for kingdom work. You might be an apostle who sees possibilities before others, a prophet who speaks truth courageously, an evangelist who connects easily with strangers, a pastor who shepherds the hurting, or a teacher who makes Scripture come alive. The beauty is that we need all these gifts working together. You don't have to be like everyone else—God designed you specifically for certain people and situations. Stop comparing your calling to someone else's. The person you're meant to reach might never connect with anyone but you. Your personality, your experiences, even your struggles have prepared you for this. Today, identify your spiritual gifting and ask God to show you how to use it intentionally in someone's life.
