A Small Thing 12-21-25

This message invites us into a profound question that cuts through the noise of our daily lives: If our life was a movie, what would people watching be screaming for us to do? Through the lens of Joseph's journey in the Christmas narrative, we discover that purpose isn't always about grand, dramatic moments or crystal-clear divine directives. Instead, we learn that most of us are already living out our purpose in the everyday grind—registering for a census, showing up for work, caring for neighbors, offering respect to competitors, rushing a friend to the hospital. The beauty of Joseph's story is that he finds himself right in the middle of God's redemptive plan, not through extraordinary actions, but through faithful obedience in ordinary circumstances. As Caesar Augustus issues decrees and the world goes about its routine business, God orchestrates the birth of the Savior through a carpenter who simply aligns his ways with God's ways. We're challenged to see that purpose can be both general and specific: generally, we fulfill God's will when we act with kindness, pray continually, give thanks, and glorify God in everything; specifically, God will make His direction unmistakably clear when He needs us to do something particular. The tension isn't usually in knowing what to do—it's in having the courage to do what we already know is right, even when it's awkward, costly, or complicated.
