Honoring Individuality

Reading: Colossians 2:2-4; Philippians 2:4 - My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.......not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Devotional: God created each person with unique gifts, passions, and purposes. Yet families often fall into the trap of forcing conformity—parents projecting their unfulfilled dreams onto children, spouses expecting their partner to be someone they're not. Paul instructs us to look not only to our own interests but to the interests of others. This requires seeing family members as individuals God is shaping, not projects we're managing. David understood he couldn't wear Saul's armor; he needed to be himself to fulfill God's calling. Similarly, each person in your family has their own "armor" that won't fit anyone else. When we honor individuality rather than demand conformity, family members flourish. They feel seen, valued, and free to become who God designed them to be. Create space for each person's unique journey.

Reflection: Who in your family might be feeling overlooked or pressured to be someone they're not? How can you honor their individuality this week?
